Quality and Customer Service do not exist at HP

I bought my daughter a HP Pavilion DV4 a year and a half ago. It constantly freezes up or shuts off. It's been a problem since we first bought it. We have plenty of security and anti-spyware programs - that isn't the issue. We tried to get help from customer service - but they wanted to charge us for help over the phone. The mouse pad keys stopped working, the sound randomly shuts off, and videos can't be played at all or the computer will shut off. All around poor quality. The quality and customer support at HP are definitely lacking.

Great Computer

This is the first HP Laptop I've purchased. The computer is solid. I like the style and the keyboard. It's very fast and has never locked up. (I've owned it for 2 months). The mouse does jump around a bit quicker than I would prefer but I can deal with that.

I'll review again in a few months.

great value for money

I was looking for a loatop as I'm going back to university for my masters. I live outside the US and laptops are pretty expensive here. One of my friends who was working in the US opted to help me by hand carrying this.

I think this is a great deal and great value for money. The cheapest brand with the same configuration would have costed me more than 1000 USD if I were to buy it here. But this was HP and it came with Original windows installed. I got it for 619/= from Amazon and shipping was free!!

Everybody in our family likes it because they can use it with skype to keep in touch with all their frieds. All my frineds at the university also agrees that this is a great value for money.

One drawback is the battery life. But I normally use it plugged in. When I'm using the battery I change the power mode to "power saver" so I can get more time. This is not a big problem.

All in all a great product.

i hate the battery

physically, and function- wise, the battery is the worst part about this laptop.
it is a massive, rectangular hunk that juts out in a ridiculous fashion in the back of this laptop,
creating a (not so) slight incline on the laptop.

the incline itself i can forgive.
but the battery itself weighs so much- that this modest little laptop isn't actually as light as it looks.
i would say this laptop ways about 7-8 pounds- half of that comes from the battery alone.
as a student who needs to carry this laptop+ other academic masses from day to day, this is definitely a negative.

however, i could forgive it's weight too, i guess, if the battery actually provided some decent life.
but no. like so many others have pointed out, the battery life is low, lasting about 3 hours at most.

besides for the battery, i guess it is a decent, average laptop- slightly bulky looking, but
good for it's price.

and the touch screen does go a little haywire, esp. when the windows is just starting, but it is nowhere
as annoying/exascerbating as the stupid batery.

Buy this if you need a desktop!!

I don't own this exact same model, I own G51vx which was previous model but this one just has some updated hardware. But let's talk business. Most people who rate products do it within 0-2 months of buying it. That is why I assume this has a lot of 5 STARS. The two major downsides that the previous model had was that the processor was 2.0GHz dual core, which was somewhat slow for a gaming PC and the screen only supported 720p. They have fixed those issues on this one. However, the screen is really glossy (you can easily use it as a mirror when the computer is off).

After using the G51VX for about 8 months(again, I've used this one at Best Buy and it's exactly the same design), it has managed to annoy me greatly. I will list the reasons why.

1. Speakers: For a laptop this size, you'd think it would have powerful enough speakers, however, ASUS has somehow managed to screw it up and its impossible to watch a show/movie without putting the headphones on.
2. Heat: Anything you keep on the left side of laptop (Soda, water, candy) is bound to heat up within minutes. The heat produced by this thing rivals space shuttles, I kid you not. It's impossible to keep it on lap if you're wearing shorts/boxers.
3. Screen: The screen could really would have been better. When I plug it to an external monitor (Dell 24 inch UltraSharp), you come to see the true potential of the graphic card. Its more vibrant, has better contrast and color gamut - the Dell Monitor . I've noticed that movies and games don't look too bad, but when you are just surfing the web or doing general office tasks, its almost strenuous to look at this thing.
4. Touchpad: With most companies trying to improve the design/feel of touch-pads on their laptops, ASUS has totally given up on this sector. This is really one of the most annoying features. The touch-pad is small, insensitive and the buttons are too hard and make noise when you click.
5. General/Usability: There's a lot of other minor issues with this laptop which really start to bug you after the initial few months. There's only one USB port in the back. There's no multimedia buttons (dedicated volume, brightness, keyboard backlight). The keyboard is insensitive (I like the keyboard backlight, thats a great feature but really, wouldn't it be even more awesome with a better functioning keyboard?). Battery doesn't last more than an hour but thats to be expected out of a gaming PC so no complaints there (but you should know this).

I had this computer at my desk most of the times connected to external speakers, keyboard and mouse, and quite frequently used dual monitor setup. Till then it was great. But then I started moving a lot (for work reasons) and it wasn't possible to take everything wherever I go. I still recommend it to people who want it purely for gaming and don't think they'll ever need to move it, but then, why not just buy a desktop? I knew I had to move sooner or later and I wanted to be able to do all things I do on a desktop so I bought this. But the only way to use this computer is like a Desktop PC, by connecting tons of accessories. The small glitches make it hard to live with on a daily basis. I frankly wouldn't mind exchanging this for a PC that boasts less hardware but has a good design/built.

Great gaming laptop

I just got this laptop yesterday, and I'm truly amazed at the gaming capabilities. So far I've played League of legends and Audiosurf both on the highest setting possible with practically no stuttering. The framerate in League of Legends stays at about a constant 50fps, however I did notice that while I tried playing winamp and LoL at the same time the game stuttered a little. This is no big deal, but it probably has to do with the 4GB of RAM, which can be upgraded to 8GB if desired.

The laptop did come with a bunch of bloatware, but this was no biggie, I just went to this website ([...]) to find out what's safe to uninstall and what I should keep. I took me a couple of hours to get rid of all the unnecessary programs, and I did have to install some new drivers for the video card to play Audiosurf, but again, it's no big deal.

The back of the screen panel lights up which looks kinda neat, but I don't really care about the looks as much as the performance. The keyboard also lights up with is nice for gaming in the dark. The keyboard is a little bit flimsy which may cause some problems in the future but I don't really think it will. I don't use the mousepad and I don't recommend you do because the buttons are kind of hard to push down, which could be annoying if your playing a game.

The vent on the side of the laptop get's kinda warm, and I've read a few reviews about this laptop overheating, but the laptop comes with a program that lets you see your core temp, cpu speed, and cpu fan speed. It will also alert you if the temperature get's too hot.

Overall I am very happy with this buy, it was definitely worth the money, the only laptop I would recommend more for the same price ($999.99) is the Asus G72GX-RBBX05 ([...]), which has a slightly better video card (an nVIDIA GeForce 260m as opposed to an nVIDIA GeForce 360m). It also comes with 6GB as opposed to 4GB of RAM. The only downside to the Asus G72GX-RBBX05 is the processor which is an older intel core 2 (2.53Ghz), while this laptop comes with a newer intel core i5 (2.26GHz) it still turbo-boosts up to 2.53GHz. However it was performance rated at 4.313Ghz ([...]).

Heats up, good screen

great laptop, the screen is amazing. 1080p on a laptop cannot get any better. One bad thing is this thing runs pretty hot, the Graphics temperature goes up to 80C, which is pretty normal when running an intense game, but since it's on a laptop you can feel the heat from your palms while resting on it.

Gaming Powerhouse... In the Size of a Laptop!

Let me start off by saying, this computer kills every other 'gaming' laptop out there. Eat your heart out, Alienware. Because ASUS wins.

I bought this a little over a month ago, and I have to say, this was the best purchase I have made in my entire life. I'm using this as a college laptop for a degree in Video Game Production. I have not yet met something this laptop can't handle. It runs NFS: Shift at full graphics and 2xAA @ 30FPS. It runs Crysis with almost all settings at High (not Very High) @ 20FS. I can run any game from before 2008 at high settings @ 60FPS+. I love this computer and it doesn't matter what I do to try and slow it down, but it just keeps running.

Also, the design of the actual computer is very attractive. The logo on the back lights up and looks very nice. The keyboard is backlit and is very bright. The track pad is one of the nicest I've used on a laptop. It has tons of ports, too. 4 USB (3 of them are 2.0), eSATA, Firewire, HDMI, Mic, Headphone, and Line-out, LAN, and VGA.

What really make this laptop stand out is the massive array of available features. One of my favorite included programs is Power4Gear. It's designed to adjust every aspect of your power settings, including overclocking the CPU. Most of the other included programs are useless, though. One of the other features included is ExpressGate, which is a quick mini-OS that boots up in just a few seconds. It's good if you just want to check something on the internet and nothing else.

Audio quality is excellent with the built-in EAX 4.0 HD audio. When I'm playing Crysis, I now can hear small little things like a Korean soldier snapping a twig in the forest. In NFS: Shift, I can hear a car coming up behind me, and in older games like Age of Empires III, I can hear every single sound separately on the screen. However, these things are only true through headphones. Speaker volume on this computer leaves something to be desired. But that's to be expected on most laptops, anyway.

The keyboard design is exactly as it should be. WASD are marked with arrows. The backlight keeps me from having to turn on a light to see it. The numberpad is just the right size. I use it whenever I'm doing school work and it does its job quite well. As with any laptop, Home, End, PgUp and PgDown are awkwardly placed. All of the Fn keys available are useful taking full advantage of the hardware. One of the most helpful Fn keys is the Power4Gear key, which instantly switches between power modes set with the program I mentioned above. There is also a key to disable the touchpad, which can be very helpful when typing.

This laptop also comes with a mouse and backpack, neither of which are a cheap build quality. It comes with the Razer Abyssus, and a Targus backpack, rebranded with the RoG logo. It's hard for me to fit all of my school books into the backpack, but then again, it was included at no extra cost, so I don't complain. The mouse is an excellent mouse, normally selling for over $50. On the bottom are DPI and pollong switches, the max being 3500DPI and 1000Hz. It has a light-up logo on the top that is appealing, too.

I would not suggest this computer for anoyone but gamers. Even on battery saving mode, and just casually browsing the internet (with throttled CPU, low display brightness, no backlit keyboard, no USB stuff plugged in), I get about 2 1/5 hours at most. You really shouldn't be using it off the plug very often if you want the best performance, anyway, as the CPU is throttled no matter what. It refuses to play anything with a decent framerate on battery.

Here's the recap:

Pros:
- Runs anything you throw at it, no matter what
- Great design, very attractive
- 1080p monitor
- Includes mouse and backpack
- Excellent keyboard
- Great audio
- Includes some powerful features
- Best laptop for the price, anywhere (this was written in 2010)
- Plenty of ports

Cons:
- Hot!
- Heavy (about 7.5 pounds)
- Speakers aren't very loud
- Low battery life

Overall, this is definitely worth the purchase. I would suggest this to any mobile gamer out there (who wants to impress their friends while they're at it).

Macbook White Review

I have to say that this product is incredible. The high quality image on the screen and how great the performance is. I was a PC user back several years ago with windows vista, and I have to say the PC back then compared to the Macbook is bad. The Macbook has great programs and can't be compared to anything else. I will list some pros and cons about this Macbook and several of my opinions.

Cons: The image quality is outstanding and clearer then anything I have ever seen. The programs on the Mac are not great but they hold everything that I ever wanted on a PC. The camera built-in is great because such as a program like Skype, you can talk directly into the computer without having a headset. I also bought iLife and iWork and haven't used them much lately but they are also great.

Flaws: The gaming on the Macbook is horrible. Such games like helicopter and some games to download are horrible because they aren't much of a quality game. The PC can run such games as Crisis, Modern Warfare 2, and plenty of others. Macbook is starting to get better in gaming though which I think is great. The battery is said to have 7 hours but my battery is getting worse and has decreased to 5 hours over one year.

My Opinions: I really don't like the pure white on the Macbook because It can be portrayed as somewhat racist to some. They also should have added some actual games to play that are first person shooter that comes with the Macbook but you can't expect everything.

I definitely prefer this over a PC.

UnBeatable

I have a late 2007 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 1gb of RAM. I switched to the MacBook from a Toshiba Satellite. The Toshiba had many problems and was always riddled with viruses and malware. The MacBook has none of those problems, it worked straight out of the box. I know I paid more for it than a PC laptop but it was well worth it. Three years later my Macbook works just as well as it did when it was new. Its fast and easy to use. The battery life has dropped considerably, but thats to be expected. I can buy a new one on eBay for 40 dollars.
Pros: runs well, fast, Leopard is easy to use, Time Machine is much better than Windows BackUp, solid, iLife is awesome and has many features
Cons: laptop gets hot, battery life drops a lot, but this is normal
Overall, this was a great purchase and well worth the money. I am now looking to upgrade to a Macbook Pro, but will use this Macbook for years to come. Buy the Apple Extended Warranty, its worth the money. My Hard drive crashed and the DC Input Board had to be replaced and the charging cord stopped working. All repairs were free under the warranty. I would definitely recommend this computer to anyone searching for a cheap fast computer. I will never go back to another Windows PC again.

Another Great Apple Product

The purchase of the Apple MacBook for my wife's office completes our transfer to an all-Apple hardware suite. The MacBook is very simply a great machine. Simple to learn, simple to use. Data conversion was a snap and the initial learning aspects were virtually nonexistent.
